Let People Answer in the Language They Think In

· David

Here's a quiet problem in a lot of survey programs: the people you most need to hear from are answering in their second language. Or not answering at all.

A warehouse team, a hospitality staff, a customer base that spans several countries — if the survey only speaks English, you're filtering out voices before the research even starts. And the people who do respond often keep it short, because explaining something nuanced in a second language is hard.

The feature: participants choose their language

When you set up a survey in Gather, you can let participants pick the language they want to take it in. Today that includes:

  • English (default)
  • Spanish
  • French
  • German
  • Portuguese

The AI interviewer holds the whole conversation in that language — questions, follow-ups, all of it. Gather keeps each response in its original language and translates it into English for your dashboard and analysis.

Why it matters

People are most honest and most specific in the language they think in. That's where the detail, the emotion, and the real reasons come out.

It also matters for trust. When an employee or customer sees a survey in their own language, it signals that you actually want their input — not just the input of the people who happen to speak English best.

One dashboard, every voice

You don't need a translator, a separate survey for each language, or a week of stitching results together. Every response lands in the same report, analyzed together, with the original words kept so nothing gets lost.

The benefit

  • Higher participation from multilingual teams and customer bases.
  • More honest, detailed answers from people speaking their first language.
  • No translation overhead — one survey, one report.
  • A fuller picture of your whole workforce or market, not just one slice of it.

If you want to hear everyone, ask everyone in a language they're comfortable with.
